What size veranda to choose?

Veranda size — how to choose the most suitable one

The correct veranda size is one of the most important decisions before starting the design. A veranda may seem large enough in an empty space, but after placing a table, chairs, and other furniture, the free space may be much less than it initially appeared.

Therefore, the size of the veranda should not be chosen solely based on the length of the house facade or a beautiful picture on the internet. First, it is worth understanding how many people will regularly use the veranda, what furniture will be there, and what you want to do in that space.

Where to start: how many people and what will you do there

The first question is not “how large a veranda can be built?”, but rather “how will we use this veranda?”.

Think about everyday situations. Will the veranda mainly be a place for morning coffee for two people? Will the whole family regularly eat there? Do you want to place a large table for guests, lounge chairs, or create a separate area for a sofa?

Before choosing the size, it is helpful to answer a few questions:

  1. how many people will use the veranda daily;
  2. how many guests do you usually want to host;
  3. will there be a dining table;
  4. is a separate relaxation area needed;
  5. will there be other furniture on the veranda;
  6. how much free space do you want to leave for pathways.

It is important to think not only about the size of the furniture but also about the space needed to push back chairs and for people to move comfortably.

3x4 m — who is it suitable for

3 × 4 m veranda has an area of approximately 12 m². This is a popular size for a compact veranda next to a house or garden building.

In this area, you can fit a small table for about four people, two separate chairs, and leave space for movement. The exact arrangement will, of course, depend on the sizes of the chosen furniture and the location of the doors.

The 3 × 4 m size may be suitable if:

  1. the veranda is intended for a small family;
  2. the main goal is to create a covered space for meals;
  3. multiple separate zones are not needed;
  4. there is not much free space next to the house.

If you want both a large dining table and a sofa or a larger relaxation area, 3 × 4 m may become too narrow. At this point, it is important not to rely solely on the number of square meters but to plan the furniture arrangement in advance.

4x4 m — who is it suitable for

4 × 4 m veranda creates a square space of approximately 16 m². The square shape is often convenient for arranging furniture since there is no distinctly narrow edge.

An additional meter in depth compared to a 3 m deep structure can be very noticeable in everyday use. More space is created to walk around the table, push back chairs, or place additional furniture.

The 4 × 4 m veranda may be suitable if you want one larger common area. For example, a table can be in the center, while chairs or another relaxation area can be along the edges.

However, 4 × 4 m is not a universal size either. It is necessary to check whether such a structure fits the specific house and whether the four-meter depth will affect the windows, roof, or yard usage.

3x9 m — who is it suitable for

3 × 9 m veranda is a completely different type of solution. It is a long structure that can be placed along a larger part of the house wall.

This size of veranda allows for the creation of several functional zones. On one side, there can be a dining table, while on the other side, there can be lounge chairs or a sofa.

The advantage of a longer veranda is the ability to divide the space according to use:

  1. dining area;
  2. relaxation area;
  3. free movement space between zones.

A depth of 3 m still means that the furniture arrangement needs to be planned carefully. However, the length of 9 m allows for the use of a large part of the house facade and does not create the entire veranda as one large room.

This solution can be particularly suitable if there are several exits from the house to the veranda or if you want to cover a larger part of the facade.

How the house itself affects the size

The desired size of the veranda is only one part of the project. The final dimensions are also influenced by the building to which the veranda will be attached.

Therefore, we go to the site and take measurements on-site. We check the heights of the building, existing roofs, foundations, and other details.

Particular attention should be paid to:

  1. the slope of the house roof;
  2. the placement of windows;
  3. the location of doors;
  4. drainpipes;
  5. existing foundations;
  6. the place where the veranda roof will connect to the house.

For example, the desired depth of the veranda may affect the required roof slope. Meanwhile, the placement of supports should be planned so that they do not obstruct doors or other important areas.

Therefore, standard sizes, such as 3 × 4 m or 4 × 4 m, are a good starting point for us, but we adapt the specific construction to the actual situation.

Common mistake

One of the most common mistakes is choosing a too small veranda.

An empty space almost always seems larger than the same area after placing furniture. A person sees a 3-meter deep area and thinks there will be plenty of space, but after placing the table and chairs, it may turn out that the pathway is too narrow.

It is especially important to remember about the chairs. It is not enough to measure just the table — a chair is pushed back during use, and space is still needed behind it to walk past.

The second mistake is planning the veranda only for today's needs. If currently four people sit at the table, but friends or family often visit, it is worth considering that during the design phase.

This does not mean that you should always build the largest possible veranda. The goal is to choose an area that you will actually use.

How to check the size in reality

Before making a final decision, there is a very simple way to check the chosen veranda size — mark it in reality.

In the yard, use a string, chalk, or other visible markers to outline the intended outer boundaries of the veranda. If you are considering a 3 × 4 m veranda, measure exactly that area.

Then place your garden furniture or items of similar sizes within it. Arrange the table, chairs, and other furniture approximately as they would be in the finished veranda.

Do not evaluate the result after just five minutes. If possible, leave the marked area and furniture for a few days. Walk around it, sit at the table, and see if there is enough space to push back the chair and move around.

This simple test often helps to understand the necessary size of the veranda much better than numbers on paper.
